Light

Light pollution is any artificial light that illuminates areas that it should not. Poorly designed, directed and maintained external lighting can cause problems when it starts to impact on neighbouring properties.

If a neighbour or business has installed lighting that is causing you problems such as excessive illumination into your home i.e. living rooms or bedrooms, we may be able to help.

Initially, we would advise that you contact the owner of the light to see if a resolution can be found informally.  Often, they are simply unaware of the impact they are having and are happy to make changes.  Where this is not possible, or the situation does not improve, the council can carry out an investigation into statutory nuisance.

Officers will visit your property to witness the impact, and you will be asked to keep a diary of the events.

If the investigation demonstrates that the light is unreasonably interfering with the use and enjoyment of your home, the light owner will be asked to take preventive measures.

This Service is unable to investigate issues relating to 'loss of light' for example due to the high hedges.  For these enquiries please contact the Council's Planning Service.
