Disabled parking

This page contains information about how to use a Blue Badge and clock and any charges that may apply in Council car parks.

The Blue Badge scheme (opens new window) for disabled persons only applies to on-street parking.

However, Sunderland City Council allows this scheme to apply to off-street parking as well.

Vehicles displaying a disabled blue badge may park free of charge without time limit in any of the on and off street parking bays except at the following:

• St Mary's Car Park (normal charges apply)
• Sunniside Multi Storey Car Park: (normal charges apply)
• Prince Street/South Street: private permit holders only

Designated disabled parking bays are available at all city car parks.

The Bridges Shopping Centre has a Shopmobility centre which can be accessed via the Bridges roof top car park.

Badge holders may park on single or double yellow lines for up to three hours in England and Wales, except where there is a ban on loading or unloading if they display a valid blue badge and clock set at the time of arrival.

Badge holders may park for free and for as long as they need to at on-street parking meters and pay-and-display machines, unless there is a traffic sign specifying a time limit for holders of blue badges. Please note: Charges apply in St Marys and Sunniside car parks.

Where a time limit is in force, you must display both the Blue Badge (opens new window) and the special blue parking disc showing time of arrival.
