Becoming a driver

Any person who wants to drive a hackney carriage or private hire vehicle must be licensed.  To get a licence to drive hackney carriages or private hire vehicles you must:

  • be over the age of 21 
  • have held a full driving licence for one year
  • have the right to work in the UK and be able to provide original evidence of your right to work 
  • pass the Council's knowledge test
  • complete a DBS check and provide original supporting documents
  • have a medical check

The usual duration of a licence is 3 years, shorter terms can be considered.
