Mere Knolls Cemetery
Mere Knolls Cemetery (opens new window) was opened in 1856 having an area of 32 acres. It has since been extended and is now currently 42 acres in size.
Notable People buried within the Cemetery
Robert Thompson (1797 - 1860). A shipwright's apprentice who became one of Sunderland's major shipbuilders.
Sir Robert Thompson. Great grandson of shipbuilder Robert Thompson and also a shipbuilder by trade. Sir Robert died in October 1951 aged 73.
Lawrence Dickse. An 18 year old Second Lieutenant with the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Forresters who died in battle in May 1916. His parents lived in London.
John Harkness. A 21 year old leading aircraftman from Sunderland. Died on 28 November 1941 while serving with the RAF in the Second World War.

Whilst cemetery gates are not formally closed and public access is available without restriction, we recommend that, for safety reasons, cemeteries are accessed during daylight hours only.
