Julia Jackson
Julia Jackson: From nurse to teacher, to councillor to devoted grandparent. Julie, aged 67, who says she is lucky enough to live in the Roker area tells us about her careers and passion for Sunderland, which led her to become Ageing Well Ambassador and community reporter.
I've had two careers in the public sector: a nurse for 21 years - working mainly in mental health and then as a secondary school teacher until I retired, aged 55.
My career change came about after completing a degree in English Literature and History at Sunderland University. My studies saw the transition from polytechnic to university and originally began as a hobby. However, my graduation enabled me to make a change which I have never regretted.
Because I care passionately about Sunderland, I have been involved in local politics for some time and served as a councillor for nine years. This allowed me to play some part in developments in my local area and to engage with several voluntary groups. I am still actively involved with the Friends of Roker Park.
I enjoy reading, the cinema and walking in the Lakes, and I'm kept very busy helping to care for my four young grandchildren. I enjoy nonfiction writing so my contributions will reflect everyday observations of our great city.
