Health and wellbeing

We spend a significant amount of time at work, so it is important that work positively contributes to our general health and wellbeing. Working for Sunderland City Council will give you access to a range of support.

Better Health at Work Award

Working for Sunderland City Council you can be assured that you we take your health and wellbeing seriously. We have achieved the Maintaining Excellence level of the Better Health at Work Award, recognising that we actively promote a healthy workplace. 

Employee Wellness Programme 

Our Employee Wellness Programme supports employees to make healthier choices that will help to improve health and wellbeing and can provide:

  • Advice and support on healthy eating to support maintaining a healthy weight
  • Information and support on exercising and how to improve physical activity levels
  • Support to stop smoking
  • Advice around managing alcohol
  • Information on managing emotional health and wellbeing, including stress
  • Display Screen Equipment (DSE) information and advice
  • Information on a wide range of health and wellbeing issues such as sleep health, back care, blood pressure and heart health

Occupational Health 

Our Occupational Health Service will provide you with a comprehensive range of proactive services to support and maintain your health and wellbeing in the workplace.

We focus on preventative measures to assist employees to remain free from ill health associated with working practices by helping to prevent illness, accidents and injury, reduce stress and promote well-being and healthy lifestyles.

Initial pre-employment health assessments are conducted to ensure the employer is advised if any additional support or adjustments would be beneficial to support you. In addition to this, (depending on the risks of the role) we will provide:

  • Health screening
  • Health surveillance
  • Immunisations
  • Workstation assessments  

We support our employee's with by advising on fitness to work and support/adjustments in the workplace when referred for a health and wellbeing assessment and can assist with the provision of Physiotherapy and Counselling services.
