Allotment Garden Allocation

Sunderland Council allotment gardens are open to any resident of Sunderland, or non-residents who reside within one mile of the City Council's area.

All plots are allocated via a waiting list on on a first come, first served basis and you may apply for up to two sites.  Once you reach the top of the waiting list for your chosen site, you will be offered the next available garden in reasonable condition, if you choose not to accept the garden offered, you will be removed from the waiting list.

Any residents registering for more than two sites, or when they already have a garden allocated, will be removed from the lists without warning.

Residents on waiting lists will be required to confirm they maintain interest in obtaining a garden on an annual basis. 

In exceptional circumstances, gardens which are below usual standards for letting may be offered with reduced rents or other incentives. A refusal to accept a plot in such a condition will not result in removal from waiting lists.

Multiple plots will not be allocated to the same household.  Once allocated a garden, individuals from the same household will be removed from any other waiting lists. 

It is difficult to determine a waiting time as allotment plots only become available when an existing tenant gives up their tenancy. Some of our sites are extremely popular and as a result already have a lot of people on the waiting list.
