Household waste and recycling centres
It's simple and easy to book your appointment to use the household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs) at Pallion (Sunderland) and Campground (Wrekenton).
There will be no access to the sites without a booking.

Please separate and sort your waste before you come - it will speed up your visit.

The restrictions in place:
- You must book an appointment to use the site to help manage traffic and reduce queuing
- The site only accepts household waste from Sunderland residents
- You will need to provide some details at time of booking on-line such as your name, address, email and vehicle registration
- If you are hiring a vehicle and therefore don't have the registration yet, use the first six letter of the hire company as the registration
- Cars, car derived vans, cars with trailers (up to 3m in length) and vans are currently able to access the site. Please note vans with trailers will not be permitted
- To manage demand, appointments are currently limited to five in a rolling 28 day period. These arrangements are subject to regular review
- Traffic management will be in place
- Proof of booking/address/confirmation of hire may be required
The following waste will be accepted:
- Batteries and small electricals items containing batteries
- they can cause fires so need to be disposed of in the dedicated battery recycling bins or electricals in the correct containers. Ask a site attendant if you're not sure. They should NOT be placed in the general waste skip
- please remove batteries from any electrical items before putting them in the correct containers
- Vaping devices (e-cigarettes)
- please place into the blue vaping recycling barrel, next to the waste electrical and electronic equipment container, near the exit of the site
- Bagged household waste
- Garden waste
- Cardboard and wood, including old furniture
- Small domestic appliances (for example, vacuum cleaners, toasters, kettles, microwaves, lawn mowers)
- Large electrical appliances (for example cookers, ovens, washing machines, dishwashers)
- TVs and computers
- Small (household) fridges
- Metals
- Soil
- Rubble (six bags maximum)
- Plasterboard
- Fluorescent tubes
- Engine and vegetable oil
- Textiles
- Household recycling (for example, plastic, cans, glass, paper)
These items CANNOT be accepted:
- Hazardous waste, including asbestos

Daily - 8am to 6pm

New Household Waste Recycling Centre
St Vincent's Revive Sunderland charity re-use shop
St Vincent de Paul Society has a new, purpose-built charity re-use shop on the Pallion HWRC site.
The shop is open 7 days a week from 9.30am to 4.30pm each day.
You don't need a HWRC permit if you are just visiting the shop. Find out more about this re-use charity shop.
Campground HWRC, Wrekenton
Gateshead Council's HWRCs sites are open including the facility at Campground, Wrekenton which is available for use by Sunderland residents.
A new booking system is now in place for the HWRCs in Gateshead and you will need to book an appointment before visiting the site at Campground. Find out more about the new booking system at Campground HWRC.

Tips for visiting the recycling centre
- The recycling centre is accessible by vehicle only. Pedestrians are not allowed to carry waste on to site
- You must be a resident of Sunderland
- Plastic bags or bin bags can only go in the general waste skips. All other recycling must be removed from plastic bags. There are bins provided for the bags.
- Make sure that you put the right material into the right container - staff are on hand to help
