Leadership blog - 26.09.19
In this blog, the Leader talks about a memorable day for Sunderland.
Well what a fantastic day for the city of Sunderland!
Today is another one of those days when I couldn't be prouder to be Leader of the Council. Not only are we opening our world-famous Sunderland Airshow later today (for the 31st time!) but we've announced that Ocado, the online grocery firm are to be the first occupants of the Beam on the former Vaux site, creating 300 jobs.
Both of these demonstrate that Sunderland is a city on the up and a fantastic place to live, visit and do business. There really is something for everyone with world-class events, stunning, award-winning beaches, parks and open spaces, a diverse and vibrant cultural offer and the most friendly and welcoming people you'll meet.
Ocado want to be here because of our people in the North East region, who are renowned for providing excellent customer service, and because the city can provide everything else the company needs including a fantastic, modern workspace with great facilities, right in the heart of the city centre.
And visitors want to come because there is so much to see and do in Sunderland the year round and especially over the Airshow weekend where up to a million people will gather at the coast to witness the spectacular air displays and entertainment programmes on the ground.
This evening the Airshow will open with RAF flying displays and music from acts including Scouting for Girls and then into a jam-packed weekend with many more breath-taking displays in the air and music from acts including Sophie Ellis-Bextor and DJ Pat Sharp.
All the Airshow details can be found here and details of all of the other events and activities taking place throughout the holidays here
Have a fantastic weekend in our beautiful city by the sea and a great summer break!
