In this blog the Deputy Leader talks about Sunderland's great community spirit
On Sunday it was great to attend Sunderland's ninth Pride festival.
Despite the rainy weather, hundreds gathered in the city centre to take part in the event and everyone had a great time.
Everyone I spoke to said that Pride just gets better and better each year and those involved in organising and running it can be very proud of a job well done.
I'm always greatly humbled as a city councillor and Deputy Leader to see how much Sunderland people show their support for causes, campaigns, communities and individuals.
We have a world-wide reputation for being a city where everyone can be sure of a warm welcome and for being really proud of our heritage and everything we've achieved, especially in overcoming challenges and sometimes adversity.
This community spirit is always in evidence when we lead the way in our Remembrance parade and service, usually with the biggest event and turnout outside of London, and when we welcome major, international events to the city such as the recent World Transplant Games.
I'm delighted that Sunderland Pride has now become very much a part of this and that it's recognised as a really prominent, annual event where we truly celebrate our city and our people.
