One of my duties as Deputy Leader is to undertake the role of Armed Forces Champion for the council.

It's an absolute honour to have this role and to work with everyone involved in supporting our service men and women, both past and present, and also their families.

In Sunderland, we are well known for our support of the Armed Forces and for showing our gratitude for the incredible job they do, and this is always demonstrated on Remembrance Sunday and on Armistice Day.

This year has been no different and the people of Sunderland turned out in their thousands in the city centre yesterday, to pay their respects. Then again this morning, on Armistice Day, another lovely service was held at the cenotaph at 11 o'clock.

I'm always so proud to be there alongside my colleagues and fellow residents at our Remembrance events. They are incredibly important and poignant occasions and ensure that we keep those who made the ultimate sacrifice, in our hearts.

Sunderland does its very best to do our heroes proud and the parade yesterday with representatives of all the forces, our wonderful veterans, the emergency services and local groups, was an amazing spectacle.

So a huge thank you to everyone who came out on these two chilly mornings and a special thanks to the organisers and everyone who played a part in the parade and services. Our service men and women mean a great deal to the people of Sunderland and those who gave their tomorrows so that we can have today, will never be forgotten.
