Sign up for your Garden Waste Collection now
Residents can now sign up for this year's garden waste collections in Sunderland.
Sunderland City Council is encouraging those with gardens to sign up before Sunday 28 February to guarantee receiving all 17 fortnightly collections between 30 March and 19 November 2021.
This year garden waste will be collected from March, with a subscription fee of £32.50. Anyone who signs up after Sunday 28 February may not receive all the collections but will still pay the same cost.
Collected garden waste will be tipped at a transfer station and transferred to a purpose-built composting facility. The waste is then processed in an open-air environment, called Open Window Composting, where it will break down in the presence of oxygen.
There are many benefits to recycling your garden waste at kerbside, including:
• The Composting process creates a valuable soil conditioner which is used for landscaping and sold as compost for gardening purposes;
• It reduces overall disposal costs while also creating a valuable usable product;
• It is a natural method of processing material which would otherwise be sent to Energy from Waste.
• Reduces the carbon impact as well as reducing fuel costs from transporting the waste in your own car to the Household Waste and Recycling Centre
Councillor Graeme Miller, the Leader of Sunderland City Council, said: "In previous years we have seen nearly 30,000 households signing up for the garden waste collection services, so it is great to know that residents care for our environment and consciously try to recycle. I hope to see even more households sign up this year to get their garden waste disposed of safely and correctly.
"While signing up for the collections is optional, it is very beneficial to households with a garden as it can help make the best use of the space available in their bins. I'm glad to say that the price has also not risen this year, meaning that everyone can receive the same great service for the same low price of less than £2 per collections, making it a cost-effective way to dispose of waste."
