Book of Remembrance

Sunderland Crematorium maintains a Book of Remembrance which contains commemorative inscriptions placed by the family or friends of the deceased.

The book is displayed daily in the Hall of Remembrance at Sunderland Crematorium, so that memorial entries may be seen on each anniversary. You can also view the Book of Remembrance online.

The book is comprised of four volumes, one for each quarter of the year with two pages per book allocated to each day.

Each inscription is hand crafted offering the same degree of permanence and artistic excellence as the best medieval illuminated manuscripts.

Inscriptions of up to five lines may be made in the book and can include an image or illustration of your choice.

To meet the anniversary of the first year after passing, applications must be received by the following dates:

  • For the anniversary months of January, February and March, the deadline is 30 September
  • For the anniversary months of April, May and June, the deadline is 31 January
  • For the anniversary months of July, August and September, the deadline is 30 April
  • For the anniversary months of October, November and December, the deadline is 31 July

Entries received after the dates specified above will appear in the subsequent years' displays.

Details of inscriptions

The first line will contain the name of the deceased, with their surname added first, followed by their first and any middle names. Honours such as OBE or MBE are allowed on first line, however, titles such as Mr, Mrs, Dr or Cllr are not.

The year of death must be included within the inscription. Where the full date is used, this will be displayed in full, for example, 1st August 2023, or 1st Aug. 2023, depending on the available space within the entry.

The deceased's full name will be presented at the beginning of each entry. However, the name will not be accepted or repeated within lines two to five of the entry.

Each inscription can consist of up to five lines, with the minimum inscription being a two-line entry.

Each line can have up to 35 characters, with spaces and punctuation included in the character limit.

Imagery to accompany inscriptions

Inscriptions can be illuminated with an illustration of your choice, for example a coat of arms, military, club or society badge, a spray of flowers, or a favourite animal.

If you would like to include an illustration, please choose from the illustration catalogue or provide a full brief description of what you would like, such as the type and colour of flower, and  or upload a copy of your chosen image or photo with your application. The artists will check entries and may suggest changes to the images supplied to make them fit better with the style of the other entries.

Unfortunately, within the Book of Remembrance we are unable to add portraits of the deceased, QR codes, links to social media or anything that may be considered as advertising.
