Commencement and completion notification

Commencement Notice

When your Building Regulations application is submitted, you will be provided with an inspection notification framework, stating the notifications we require. This will allow us to inspect the works and minimise the risk of non-compliance with the Building Regulations.

For all types of work, you should provide Building Control with a written notice at least two days before you start the work. From 1 October 2023, you are also required to notify us at the point where work is deemed to have legally began:

  • For extensions/new buildings, this is when all substructure work and the ground floor is completed
  • For other type of work, it is when 15% of the work is completed

To confirm when you have commenced the works, please send your name, address and application number by email to buildingcontrol@sunderland.gov.uk or submit the commencement details by post to to Building Control, City Hall, Plater Way, Sunderland SR1 3AA.

Completion Notice

A person who has submitted a building notice or an application for building control approval with full plans for carrying out building work, must notify the council that work has been complete not more than five days after that work has been completed. Please download and complete the Building Regulations Completion Notice form and return to us by email to buildingcontrol@sunderland.gov.uk or by post to Building Control, City Hall, Plater Way, Sunderland SR1 3AA.

Please note, we will not issue a completion certificate unless we have received the appropriate notifications as described above.
