Finding out about Community Engagement Team at Northumbria police
Jackie recently met with Michelle George Community Engagement Officer within Northumbria Police. It's a good opportunity to reach out and let you all know what the Community Engagement Team do, how they could possibly help or support you and your groups with any events you have planned or are planning soon or in the future.
Firstly, Michelles explains about SAFO. This is a digital information bank committed to safeguarding vulnerable people. It was previously known as The Herbert Protocol, which is a simple risk reduction tool to help the police in their search for people living with dementia who go missing or get lost.
As a team we identify new or underrepresented communities within our area, South Tyneside, and Sunderland. We are here to provide reassurance and guidance in relation to any emerging concerns that our communities may have.
We can also provide training inputs and presentations around various subjects such as Hate Crime Awareness and Hate Crime Champions, Safe Reporting Centres, Knife Crime, and Fraud and Scam awareness to name a few.
We are working closely with our local Universities, Colleges, Schools, and in particular Special Educational Needs Schools. We have on-going work around Bullying, Hate Crime in Schools, Staying Safe On-line and Staying Safe in the Community (for adults with learning difficulties).
We work with and manage the Asylum Seekers and Refugees in our area, International NHS staff, and Overseas Students. We carry out "Welcome to the UK" presentations as and when needed. We Support many community events and groups such as Pride, International Women's Day, Hate Crime Awareness Week, and World Autism Day.
We Host and participate in regular community forums, including Joint Engagement Groups (JEGs), Independent Advisory Groups (IAG), Disability Advisory Group (DIAG), and Interfaith Forums etc.
