Household waste and recycling centres

The household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs) at Beach Street, Deptford and Campground Household Waste and Recycling Centre are open following social distancing guidelines.

It's simple and easy to book your appointment to use the site at Beach Street.

To make sure that our facilities can operate within the guidelines, and to protect the safety of our staff and our residents, there will be restrictions in place.

Separate your waste before you come - it will speed up your visit.

Beach Street, Deptford

The restrictions in place:

  • Anyone in self-isolation or with Covid-19 symptoms must not visit the HWRC under any circumstances
  • If any households have had Covid-19 symptoms then the waste should be left for 72 hours before being brought to site, with that waste being doubled bagged
  • You must book an appointment to use the site to help manage traffic and reduce queuing
  • Cars, car derived vans, cars with trailers (up to 3m in length) and vans are currently able to access the site. Please note vans with trailers will not be permitted.
  • To manage demand, appointments are currently limited to five in a rolling 28 day period. These arrangements are subject to regular review.
  • Social distancing at two metres will be strictly enforced and staff are unable to assist the public in unloading waste from their vehicle.
  • A maximum of two adults from the same household will be allowed out of the car to unload waste, and they must remain in their drop off area.
  • Traffic management will be in place
  • Sites will be regularly cleaned
  • Proof of booking/address may be required, please display in your car windscreen
  • Residents should wash their hands before and after visiting the site and avoid touching their face

The following waste will be accepted:

  • Batteries and small electricals items containing batteries - they can cause fires so need to be disposed of in the dedicated battery recycling bins or electricals in the correct containers. Ask a site attendant if you're not sure. They should NOT be placed in the general waste skip

A booking system is in place to access the site. This will minimise waiting times and prevent the build-up of lengthy queues. Twenty minute time slots will be available with bookings available on a first come first served basis. There will be no access to the site without a booking.

Book an appointment for Beach Street HWRC

Due to significant roadworks in the area as part of the construction of SSTC3, traffic management arrangements will also be in place. If you have booked a visit to the site you will need to travel along Farringdon Row and join the queue at Beach Street at your allocated booking time and will need to follow strict social distancing measures while on site. See the Beach Street HWRC pre-booked appointment access map for details.

You will also need to display proof of address.

Campground, Wrekenton

Gateshead Council HWRCs sites are open including the facility at Campground, Wrekenton which is available for use by Sunderland residents. However this is expected to be very busy as well with strict social distancing measures in place and new ways of operating.

A temporary odd and even number plate system to help manage traffic and reduce queuing is currently in place. This means you can only visit the Campground HWRC on certain days depending on your vehicle number plate. At the end of November a booking system will be implemented and you will need to book a slot before visiting the site. Find out more about the new booking system coming soon at Campground's HWRC.

  • The recycling centre is accessible by vehicle only. Pedestrians are not allowed to carry waste on to site.
  • You must be a resident of Sunderland.
  • Plastic bags or bin bags can only go in the general waste skips. All other recycling must be removed from plastic bags. There are bins provided for the bags.
  • Make sure that you put the right material into the right container - staff are on hand to help.

Plans are being made for a new HWRC in Pallion. This new site will replace the existing Beach Street site.
