Mayors biography

The Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Sunderland, Councillor Henry (Harry) Trueman

On leaving school I started an apprenticeship as a motor engineer.  I still have a great deal of interest in cars and motorbikes today and have made a hobby out of building and restoring all kinds of vehicles.

After my apprenticeship I then went on to work 13 years in Pyrex which later became Corning's glass and then I spent just short of 25 years with telecommunications provider BT. During my time with BT as well as being a Field Engineer, I was trained to work with our disabled customers helping them with communications equipment to meet their needs.

For most of my working career I was a union representative which is where my interest in politics began.

In 1995 I was elected as Ward Councillor for Washington West and I am proud to still be serving the constituents in this area today.

My wife Dorothy is also a Councillor in the Washington West ward and together we have two grown up children and a Grandson who we love dearly.

For those of you who don't know me, I have served on many of the Councils committees and was a Cabinet member for over 15 years.  I have also held the position of Deputy Leader and Leader of the Council.

On Wednesday 19 May 2021 I was elected as the Mayor of Sunderland for 2021-2022 and my wife, Dorothy was elected as my Mayoress.  Councillor Alison Smith, Redhill Ward was elected to serve as Deputy Mayor and her Consort is her Husband David and I am looking forward to working with them both over the next 12 months.

Although the year ahead will no doubt be a different experience to that of most past Mayor's due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, I am very much looking forward to celebrating and promoting the great people, businesses, charities, organisations,  community associations and more based in this wonderful city we get to call home.

If you are a business, charity, community group etc hosting an event that you would like the Mayor to attend, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of the Mayor by emailing or telephone 07766 367 426.
